These planes were used for traffic watch in the Washington, DC area from 1997 until the end of the contract in 2011 and are now surplus to our needs.  They were professionally flown; the majority of our pilots held ATP ratings and all had in excess of 1000 hours PIC time.

The diesel conversions, engines, originally sold under the Thielert name, were done in 2006.  The product line was subsequently taken over by Continental, and is now supported through their system.

The engines are based on a Mercedes-Benz industrial unit that’s been around for decades.

In the US, they use Jet A.    They are also certified on various blends of diesel in other parts of the world.

Fuel burn is in the range of 4-5 gph.   There is no mixture control, primer, magnetos, carbureator, or unreliable Cessna charging system - all that is gone.  A single power lever controls the dual FADEC systems.  In turn, they manage the throttle, electronic fuel injection, MT constant-speed prop, fuel rail pressure,  and turbocharger.

The electrical system is powered by a Bosch 90 amp alternator.  There are two emergency backup batteries capable of keeping the dual FADEC systems running for an additional 30-45 minutes in the unlikely event of a complete electrical failure.
